Gap Analysis Of Plastic Waste Recycling Value Chain In Lagos State

Local Economic Development (LED), July 2021

Lagos Plastic Recycling Gaps Analysis

Lagos generates about 6 million tons of waste annually, with plastics accounting for 23%, yet only 12% is recycled. This report by the Nigeria Climate Innovation Center (NCIC), supported by GIZ/SEDIN, examines gaps across Lagos’ plastic recycling value chain and identifies opportunities for a stronger circular economy. It highlights challenges including limited funding, inadequate infrastructure, health risks, high logistics costs, and weak policy enforcement. The report recommends formalizing waste recovery, improving access to finance and equipment, strengthening logistics, and expanding skills and inclusion initiatives to create green jobs, particularly for women and youth.
